**Nat Sci 1 - Foundations of Physical Science.**

This is a course on the laws of nature that form the foundation of physical sciences, chemistry, physics, astronomy and earth science.

Prerequisite: Math 1

Credits:3 units (3 hrs. lecture/week)

**Physics 1 - Physics for Health and General Science Students.**

Short course in Physics covering the laws of mechanics, heat sound, electricity, magnetism and optics with special emphasis on the descriptive analysis of physical problems.

Prerequisite: Math 1

**Physics 3 - Introduction to General Physics for SPEAR.**

Lectures with demonstration, laboratory and recitation-problem sessions. Topics to be discussed are the particle dynamics, conservation of energy, momentum and impulse, static and dynamics of rigid bodies, properties of matter, fluid mechanics, heat and temperature with emphasis on the application on human body mechanics and physical activities.

**Physics 11 - Introductory Physics I.**

Force, Newton’s law of motion, work and energy, momentum, gravitation, rotation, Hooke’s law, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, heat and the laws of thermodynamics.

Physics 11.1 - Introductory Laboratory Physics I.

A laboratory course to accompany Physics 11.

Credits: 1 unit (3 hrs lab/week)

**Physics 12 - Introductory Physics II.**

Continuation of Physics 11; Properties of sound, waves, geometrical optics, electricity and magnetism.

A laboratory course to accompany Physics 12.

**Physics 13 - Introductory Physics III.**

Special relativity, Bohr theory, wave properties of matter, quantum theory and atomic structure, X-ray, radioactivity, nuclear structure, radiation and health physics.

**Physics 13.1 - Introductory Laboratory Physics III.**

A laboratory course to accompany Physics 13.

**Physics 21 - General Physics I.**

Vectors, conditions of equilibrium, force and motion, gravitation, rotation, elasticity and harmonic motion, hydrostatics and hydrodynamics.

Prerequisite: Math 17

A laboratory course to accompany Physics 21.

**Physics 31 - General Physics II.**

Heat, thermal properties of matter, laws of thermodynamics, kinetic theory, waves and vibrations, acoustics, geometrical optics; reflection, refraction, lenses and optical instruments, interference, diffraction, polarization.

Prerequisite: Physics 21

Co-requisite: Math 61

A laboratory course to accompany Physics 31.

** Physics 41 - General Physics III.**

Electrostatics, electric fields and potentials, dielectrons and capacitance, electric current, magnetic fields, induced emf, magnetic properties of matter, alternating currents, electromagnetic waves, special relativity (photoelectric effect, x-ray and Bohr’s theory).

Prerequisite: Physics 21

A laboratory course to accompany Physics 41.

** Physics 101 - Classical Mechanics for Teachers.**

A calculus treatment of classical mechanics covering introductory vector analysis, forces, potential energy, gravitation, central forces and planetary motion and the dynamics of rigid bodies. This course is intended for students pursuing the degree of Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Physics.

Prerequisite: Math 61 and Physics 13

** Physics 102 - Classical Electromagnetism for Teachers.**

A calculus treatment of classical electromagnetism using vector analysis and partial differential equations. Topics include the concepts of electrostatics, electric fields and potentials, dielectrics, Laplace’s equation, magnetic materials, Ampere’s law, Faraday’s law of induction and Maxwell’s equations. This course is intended for B.S.E. major in Physics.

** Physics 103 - Heat, Thermodynamics and Optics for Teachers.**

A calculus treatment on the concepts of heat and temperature, laws of thermodynamics, kinetic theory of gases, Maxwellian molecular velocity distribution, entropy, waves, geometrical and physical optics, lenses and optical instruments. This course is intended for B.S.E. major in Physics.

** Physics 104 - Modern Physics for Teachers.**

An introduction on concepts of modern physics. Topics include special relativity, Lorentz transformation, photoelectric effect, early atomic theories, Planck’s radiation law, Rutherford’s atom, de Broglie’s hypothesis and its consequence, Bohr atom and wave properties of matter.

Prerequisite: Physics 13 and Math 61

** Physics 105 - Physics for Secondary Teachers.**

A course primarily intended for secondary school teachers majoring in Physics. It includes lectures on teaching relationship with emphasis on Physics teaching, laboratory activities, improvising laboratory equipment, utilizing locally available materials, formulation of different types of examination in mechanics and heat.

Prerequisite: Physics 12

**Physics 106 - Physics for Secondary Teachers.**

This course is a continuation of Physics 105 with emphasis on the areas of electricity and magnetism, waves, sounds and light.

**Physics 117 - Advanced Laboratory I.**

Instrumentation and selected experiments in electronics and modern physics. Activities include shop practice, laboratory techniques and data analysis.

Continuation of Physics 117.

**Physics 121 - Theoretical Mechanics I.**

Newtonian mechanics of particles and systems of particles. Vector analysis, conservation of energy, conservative forces, central force, gravitation, special relativity and the covariant formulation.

**Physics 122 - Theoretical Mechanics II.**

Lagrangian-Hamiltonian dynamics of rigid bodies. Rotating coordinate system, small oscillations, Hamilton-Jacobi theory, continuum mechanics.

**Physics 131 - Electromagnetic Theory I.**

A rigorous treatment of classical electromagnetism using vector analysis and partial differential equations; electric fields and potentials, solutions of Laplace’s and Poisson’s equations, dielectric materials, magnetostatics, magnetic materials, circuit analysis.

Prerequisite: Physics 41 and Physics 191

**Physics 132 - Electromagnetic Theory II.**

Maxwell’s equations and their applications, electromagnetic waves, reflection and refraction, wave guides, resonant, cavities, antennas, special relativity and the formulation of electrodynamics, Lienard-Wiechert potentials, radiation from an accelerated charge.

**Physics 141 - Modern Physics I.**

Historical and experimental foundation of relativity, relativistic mechanics, early atomic theories, Planck’s radiation law, photoelectric effect, the Rutherford atom, Bohr theory and its triumphs, generalizations and difficulties, de Broglie hypothesis and its consequences, wave mechanics and the Schroedinger equation, applications to one-dimensional systems.

Continuation of Physics 141. Topics include Schroedinger theory and its application to atomic and molecular physics, solids, nuclei and elementary particles.

**Physics 143 - Quantum Mechanics I.**

Hilbert space formulation of quantum mechanics; canonical commutation relations, algebraic methods, the harmonic oscillator, angular momentum and spin, hydrogen atom, approximation methods, atomic transitions, selection rules, symmetry and degeneracy, systems of particles, identical particles, helium atom.

Prerequisite: Phys 142

**Physics 144 - Quantum Mechanics II.**

Application of quantum mechanics to atomic physics, molecular physics, solid state physics, nuclear physics and statistical mechanics, scattering theory, relativistic wave equations, quantization of fields (introduction to elementary particles and general theory of relativity).

Crystal structure, crystal bonding, mechanical properties of solids, lattice vibrations and thermal properties, free-electron gas, energy bands metals, dielectric and optical properties, magnetic properties, defects in crystals.

**Physics 160 - Thermodynamics and the Kinetic Theory.**

Thermodynamics systems, equations of state, laws of thermodynamics, phase changes, entropy, kinetic theory of gases, distribution of molecular velocities, molecular transport phenomena, Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics, introduction to statistical mechanics.

**Physics 161 - Statistical Mechanics I.**

Statistical methods, statistical description of systems of particles, statistical thermodynamics and macroscopics parameters, ensembles, partition, functions, kinetic theory of gases, application to simple systems, phase transitions.

**Physics 162 - Statistical Mechanics II (elective).**

Quantum statistics and applications, Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics, blackbody radiation, conduction electrons in metals, lattice vibrations, transport-processes, irreversible processes and fluctuations.

Properties of nuclei, radioactivity, nucleon-nucleon forces, the deuteron, nuclear models, nuclear reactions, fission and fusion reactions and processes.

Properties of elementary particles, symmetries and conservation of laws, interactions of elementary particles, current researches and results.

Stellar data and measurements, the Hertzeprung-Russel diagram, physical processes in stars, stellar evolution, measurement of galactic distances, Hubble’s law, cosmology.

**Physics 185 - General Relativity (elective).**

Special relativity, covariant formulation of mechanics and electrodynamics, principle of equivalence, tensor calculus, Einstein’s field equations, the Schwarschild solutions and other standard results, experimental tests.

**Physics 191 - Mathematical Physics I.**

Fourier series and Fourier transform, boundary-value problem, partial differential equations of mathematical physics, special functions, complex analysis, vector spaces, linear transformations, matrix theory, eigen values, Hermitian matrices, spectral representation.
