Linkages

In the pursuit of developing a culture of research in the Institute and to continually improve the Department's teaching and research capabilities, the Department collaborates to the different research and learning institutions at the national and international levels .

International Linkages

The Physics Department has active linkages with Japan's High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) in Tsukuba, Japan. It has received a complete donation of international-standard instrumentation in high energy experiments from Prof. Kazuo Abe in 1995 and considerable number of the Department's faculty members have visited KEK as researchers in the last five years. An active collaboration with other KEK professors through the Department's involvement with the Asian Committee for Future Accelerators (ACFA) Working Group has started since 1998.

The current involvement of the Department to the Time Projection Chamber Technology R&D studies have paved a wider collaboration with other institution like Carleton University in Canada, Max Planck Institute (MPI) in Munich, Germany, High Energy Research Institute in LAL/Orsay, France and six Japan National Universities (Tsukuba, Saga, Hiroshima, Kinki, Kogakuin and Tokyo Institute of Agricultural Universities.) In addition, MSU-IIT represents the country as an active collaborator in the Asian Committee for Future Accelerators (ACFA) - Linear Collider Working Group and has presented research papers in its annual physics/detector workshops in Beijing, China, and also in Taipei, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. At present, the following are active members of the ACFA: Allister Levi Sanchez, Jingle Magallanes, Dennis Arogancia, Hermogenes Gooc Jr., Editha P. Jacosalem, Rosario L. Reserva and Angelina M. Bacala.

The Department has also inked a Memorandum of Agreement of cooperation with the Physics Department of Niigata University, Niigata, Japan in March 1997. Since then, a number of exchanged visits of some faculty members from both universities have greatly helped in strengthening the research capabilities of the Department. Dr. Allister Levi C. Sanchez is the first faculty member of the Department who finished his Doctoral of Science in Experimental High Energy Physics studies in Niigata University on September 2005.

National Linkages

The Department is actively doing collaborative research works with the Ateneo de Zamboanga University and the MSU-Marawi physics faculty members. These two institutions are part of the previously conducted Mindanao-wide project entitled Mapping of Cosmic Ray Flux in Mindanao Island partly funded by the Third World Academy of Science(TWAS). Other institutions in Mindanao such as the MSU-General Santos, NORMISIST in Butuan City and SPPC in Tandag, Surigao del Sur will later take part in this research. In September 2003, the Department has entered a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Research Center for Theoretical Physics (RCTP) of the Central Visayas Institute Foundation in Jagna, Bohol with Dr. Christopher and Maria Victoria Carpio - Bernido as visiting professors to the Ph.D. Physics Program of the Department.

Handling of advanced level theoretical physics courses and research level thesis of graduate students were among the things stipulated in the agreement. The Department has also initiated a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) on October 29, 2003. Proposed physics lectures and demos in USEP, Davao City are part of the lined-up activities subsequent to the establishment of the agreement.

In 2001, DOST-PCASTRD awarded the Department with a P1.14M equipment grant through its Institution Development Program. Master if Science in Physics program also got accreditation from this body on 2001. Recent collaboration have been initiated between Physics Department and the Samahang Pisika ng Pilipinas (SPP) based in UP-Diliman in a form of jointly hosting a physics lecture and demo in Iligan City. Annual participation to the scientific meeting of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) has given the Department a national recognition in high energy physics research outputs.

The on-going negotiation with the Fairchild Semiconductors, Incorporated at Cebu City for Faculty Immersion Program and the On-the-Job Training (OJT) of the Junior B.S. Physics Students during Summer term with member industry of the Iligan Bay Chamber of Industries (IBCI) are actively pursued by the Department. This exposure programs will enable both the faculty members and students experience the latest technological processes and research and development activities of the industries.

Samahang Pisika ng Visayas at Mindanao (SPVM)

Now, the SPVM is the most important of all our local linkages. Not only because the department faculty members are the lead organizers, founding members and officers of this association but also because of its scope –– the whole of Mindanao and Visayas. The SPVM is clearly the platform by which the department can carry out its long-term linkages in physics research and instruction.
